Meteorology Academy
About Me.
Simon Ashton
"I can teach you meteorology because I understand first-hand the critical role weather plays in aviation safety and efficiency.
With over fifteen years of expertise, I've navigated through the complexities of weather forecasting and analysis, honing my skills in predicting conditions that impact flight operations.

My journey from the prestigious Met Office to serving as Head of Meteorology for the ground-breaking Zephyr project at Airbus Defence & Space has equipped me with practical knowledge that directly translates to the cockpit. Whether you're preparing for a routine flight or facing the challenges of extreme environments, I can provide you with the tools and insights to make informed decisions and mitigate weather-related risks.

Having supported military operations worldwide and advised on meteorological matters during weather catastrophes, I've developed a deep understanding of the unique demands aviation places on weather forecasting. My experience enables me to tailor meteorological education specifically to the needs of pilots and mission planners.

Furthermore, my secondments with the FCO and DfID have allowed me to provide critical meteorological advice during weather catastrophes and educate policymakers on global weather patterns. My involvement in providing meteorological advice to the Silver Spitfire team during their globe-spanning journey and my first-hand experience as an aviation/expedition forecaster in Antarctica underscore my commitment to practical, real-world application of meteorological principles. This experience allowed me to achieve a rare milestone of working on all seven continents.

In essence, I can teach you meteorology not just as a theoretical subject, but as a vital skillset that enhances your ability to navigate the skies safely and efficiently."

Richard Tyler, Vice President of Flight Operations at AALTO HAPS Ltd
Colleague at the Zephyr HAPS project...
Simon’s meteorology knowledge and teaching style are both excellent. He can teach from before PPL to beyond ATPL level aviation related meteorology. As an ATPL holder myself I was impressed with how Simon significantly increased my knowledge of the weather, from large scale organized systems down to very high resolution, local weather effects.
David Wood, Flight Operations Post Holder
I worked closely with Simon for 5 years on the Zephyr flight programme...
Simon has an outstanding teaching style - always very engaging - his expert knowledge shines through the material he delivers taking everyone in the lesson with him. He can talk at great depth on all of his subject material but still makes it easy to understand. His sessions are great, informative and enjoyable.
